New research has found that eight out of ten Brits are no longer sure when the start of winter is, due to changing climates over the past few years.

Around three quarters of those polled also agreed that Britain's weather has become more erratic in the last 20 years, and this is impacting when people prepare their homes for winter.

More than one in ten Brits thinks that winter begins in September, three in ten think it starts in October, over a third believe it starts in November, and almost two in ten believe that winter doesn't begin until December.

The survey was carried out by British Gas, who are worried that the British public's confusion around the seasons will affect the preparations they should make for their homes to cope with the winter weather.

Only one in ten of those surveyed said they were considering cleaning out their guttering and drains - which helps houses deal with the dangers that the colder weather can bring.

James Richards, British Gas Chief Meteorologist said: “As we all know the British weather is incredibly unpredictable. Just two years ago we had record high temperatures in November followed by the worst December in 350 years.

"Because the weather can change in a matter of days from mild to extremely cold, it’s best to prepare now".
