The enchanting Leeds City Council garden ‘Scent of a Roman’ has won a Royal Horticultural Society Gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show 2007. Denise Preston, Chief Recreation Officer and Head of Parks, spoke of their achievement; “We are absolutely thrilled with a silver medal. Our staff have done a wonderful job and we will be back next year and going for Gold!”

Designed by a team from Leeds City Council’s Parks and Countryside Department, the garden has a strong Yorkshire theme, utilising local materials but the major source of inspiration is drawn from the archaeological and historical evidence that exists of a Roman settlement in Leeds. The design includes plant species that were introduced to the UK by the Romans for their scent, culinary and medicinal uses. Other native Yorkshire species are interspersed with the Roman plants.

‘Scent of a Roman’ is sponsored by Thorpe Park Developments Limited, a state of the art business park covering 270 acres and providing a million square feet of office space in East Leeds. The garden will be re-created here after the show.
