Old lighting: Perhaps you have a lamp you never use, some outdoor lights that no longer work or even some Christmas lights that are no longer to your taste. If this is the case- remove these items from your space and enjoy some natural light instead.

Fluff: It may sound like a simple decluttering exercise, but fluff can get everywhere- even if you think you think you run a generally clean home. Try moving furniture and pulling out cupboards- get help if needed- and find out what fluff lies below. Hoover it up and give yourself some breathing room.

Tags: Unless they are attached to clothes you are going to return to the store- they are useless pieces of card that have no purpose after they have been torn away from the garment. In other words- there is little reason to keep them.

Baking equipment: If you fancied yourself a baker at one point in your life but have never used the equipment or felt the desire to bake a cake- why do you have the necessary tools to do so? Accept the truth- that you prefer to do other things instead.

Cheese equipment: When you first moved into your home- perhaps you fantasized about people coming over for wine and a large cheese board with crackers, chutneys and grapes galore. Sadly, that has never happened and when you have people over- they tend to be so full from the starter, main course and dessert that there is no room for cheese. If this sounds familiar- rid your home of the board, the knives that go with it and the idealistic view of intellectual conversations had over brie. If you fancy cheese at the end of a meal once in a blue moon- you can always cut it with a normal knife and eat it off a plate.

Games: Do you have a sideboard full of games that you never play? Old Monopoly boards and half played games of Scrabble? A dusty set of cards and Dominos that never see the light of day? If you no longer want to play the games in this space- give them to someone who will enjoy opening them up and using them for their intended purpose leaving you with room for things you use- or just more space.

Pennies: I am not saying throw your money away- but if you do keep a jar of loose change in the house, and it’s looking rather full- bag it up and bank it. Better in your bank account than lying around. There might be more there than you thought.
