With summer's warmer temperatures just around the corner, we can begin to get outdoors and enjoy our gardens a little bit more in the UK. If you are a keen gardener you may have already begun to plant flowers, shrubbery, and herbs, or some of our other garden tasks for the month May. Prepping your outdoor space does not end with planting and sowing, however. A patio, lawn or terrace can act as an additional room in your home and is a great place to enjoy a quiet morning coffee or a family BBQ. With this in mind, it is a good time to start preparing your garden for the summer and equip it with comfortable seating, furniture and a BBQ, or maybe even a pizza oven. Preparing your garden for summer can be a lot of fun, whether you are planting new seeds or furnishing a patio. For families with kids you can even get the little ones involved in some gardening tasks.

Garden furniture and accessories

The likes of patio furniture, garden seating and outdoor cooking equipment can diversify your outdoor space and ensure you enjoy it to the fullest. This is where outdoor DIY comes in. Adding a fresh coat of paint to a fence or installing a flower bed, for example, can help break up the space in your garden and provide some structure. Planning a new garden layout or design requires forward thinking. As with interiors, there is a wide range of tools available that can help make garden DIY that bit easier. For example, easy to handle wallpaper repair adhesives can be very handy for fixing damage to wallpaper indoors, while other glue products can be used to repair a range of indoor and outdoor items, whether wooden, metallic, or plastic. If you are having a BBQ, garden party, or outdoor family gathering, set the scene with accessories and features such as the following:

  • Garden lighting or outdoor candles will add a warm, welcoming atmosphere after sunset
  • Textiles such as cushions and blankets provide comfort while also adding a pop of colour
  • Seating around a fire pit will let you enjoy long evenings outdoors, even if the temperature drops
  • water feature will add a new element and can be used to break up space
  • Sun loungers will add a holiday vibe to any patio or terrace
  • Outdoor dining accessories such as plates, glasses and napkins are ideal for setting a party scene on BBQ night

Decorate your Garden on a Budget

Decorating and updating your garden doesn't need to be expensive. Fire pits or wooden decking for instance can be self-built with some online research. Likewise, upcycling existing garden furniture is a great way to add character while decorating your garden on a budget. Keeping a lawn neatly mowed and using larger plants like bamboo, hydrangeas, and shrubbery are inexpensive ways to add some structure to your garden and keep it looking fresh. Similarly, using differently-sized plants and flowers can create an interesting landscaped-effect, without costing the earth, while smaller accessories like cushions and blankets can be used to add a touch of colour and texture to garden seating.

May and June are the perfect months to plan your outdoor space and get planting and designing. The best flowers and plants to sow in these months include sunflowers and marigolds, plus it is a great time to start a vegetable garden. And once your garden is complete for the end of June you can enjoy the holiday atmosphere and BBQ season throughout July, August and into September.
