What secrets lie behind your beauty?

What secrets lie behind your beauty?

Colouring, waxing, plucking and buffing – it’s all part of the hard work it takes women to achieve the natural look, a new survey reveals today.

Research commissioned by nice’n easy, found that over half of women agree that looking natural takes a lot of effort, with less than a third considering themselves to be naturally beautiful.  The research shows that British women keep their beauty regimes well hidden however, as a whopping 90% of 2,000 men surveyed believe that their partners are natural beauties.

This begs the question; do men really know what goes on behind the bathroom door?  Apparently not, as a quarter of women surveyed confess to having at least one beauty secret, while 23% confided that nobody (even their friends!) really knows the extent of their beautifying. Top of the confidential list is waxing or bleaching their moustache, with 27% of admitting that this would be the worst beauty secret their partner could discover.

There are many more beauty rituals that the fairer sex would rather keep hidden, admitting to having never performed the following in front of their other halves:

  • Waxing or bleaching moustache
  • Waxing bikini line
  • Whitening teeth
  • Applying fake tan
  • Plucking eyebrows
  • Colouring hair

So what is it that women are trying to hide?  Fifty-five percent of those surveyed state that they have at least one beauty no-no that they do not like their partner to see with their top-to-toe list of beauty ‘horrors’ including showing a moustache, underarm hair, stubbly legs and grey roots.

The secret to a beautiful relationship?

As well as helping women to cover up these beauty faux-pas’ and look their personal best, the research reveals that beauty secrets could in fact be healthy for relationships.  Of the British men polled, 87% said that they don’t mind if their partner keeps some of her beauty rituals hidden, a view supported by women, with 70% who keep a beauty secret from their partner believing it is key to a good relationship.

Psychologist and psychotherapist Rachel Shattock Dawson explains why: “In an age where very little remains taboo, many women still prefer to keep some things private, believing that there's a place for a little mystery and mystique even within their closest relationships.  Knowing your hair looks great and that you look your natural best clearly pays great dividends in confidence and self-esteem. However, some of our beauty rituals aren't the most romantic sights to witness. Some women prefer to keep these activities behind closed doors to keep the romance alive and to appear more naturally sexy and attractive to their partners.

"We know the importance of first impressions and that our hair is one of the first things people notice about us. A good cut with great colour, condition, body and gloss are enviable assets that keep us looking youthful, attractive and polished. Women want to have a good hair day every day because they know they feel better when they look their best.”

Hair colour is called out by women as a real confidence booster that cheers them up and makes them look younger; no wonder as three quarters of men say changing her hair is the most noticeable thing a woman can do to look her best.
