Paul Smith A/W 12

Paul Smith's Autumn/Winter 12 collection was simple, clean cut with a hint of masculinity and the hair helped to enforce this look.

Peter Gray for Moroccanoil created the look and explains that it was around the model's profile, rather than being inspired by a certain 'look' or era. The androgynous but feminine feel to the collection was a complete parallel to the soft and natural look created with the hair.

“We were looking for a shape that was masculine from the front, yet feminine at the back,” explains Peter Gray. “We wanted to create tight sides that give an over-lapping softness. So, from the front you see a narrow shape and from the profile you see a big low-rounded convex shape that went into a low ponytail that tucked into the neck.”

“I loved the idea that it was bulbous but not in a 60’s way, the volume wasn’t high up on the crown, it was much lower. I had to create a base to give hair ‘guts’ creating a textured base that would also offer that soft fluffy look. We wanted to create a grungy but sexy messy look making sure that the hair didn’t look as though it was freshly washed.”

“I used Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray to give the base its lift, spraying it right at the roots, and then massaging it in with my fingers, plus heat from a hairdryer to help set the look. The texture of the hairspray allowed for backcombing and give that great low bulbous volume that is seen at the nape of the neck.”

“The ends of the hair were lightly curled once it was tied tightly; I then sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous hairspray on my fingers, and started to scrunch the hair to give it more texture. I also used Moroccanoil Hydrating styling cream to help give it a little more texture to keep the curls in place.”

HOW THE LOOK WAS CREATED

Hair was brushed out thoroughly and section to allow easy access to the roots.

Throughout the different sections, spray Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray right at the roots. Using your fingers, mess the hair at the roots and use a hairdryer to dry the hairspray and set the ‘messed up’ textured look. Repeat throughout the whole of the hair.

For the over-lapping look, section an inch of hair above each ear, spray Mororccanoil Luminous Hairspray from root to tip and comb through using a fine comb.

Lift the hair, (leaving a small section at the base of the neck) and secure at the top of the head to allow the two sections to be pulled tightly. Secure the pieces at the nape of the neck and tie with an elastic band.

Once the two pieces are secured, the rest of the hair (to the crown of the head) is sectioned and backcombed throughout to make way for the bulbous look.

After hair is backcombed, lightly run Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream throughout the hair to help protect the hair during styling and to also keep the curl in place.

Use a ½” curling iron, start at the crown and curl random sections to create soft natural looking waves.

Using a Moroccanoil Paddle Brush, lightly brush over the top layer to create a clean side parting. Bring all of the hair to the nape of the neck and secure using an elastic band, making sure the bulbous shape is still well defined.

Section a small piece of hair from the ponytail and spray Moroccanoil Luminous Hair throughout then carefully wrap the hair around the elastic band and secure to conceal.

Spray Luminous Hairspray directly on to fingers and start messing the ponytail to create more texture. Smooth Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream throughout the ponytail to keep the curls in place then curl random sections of hair to give a natural messy wave. Run fingers through to loosen the curls.

Using curling irons, curl the hair around the face and push hair back towards the ears to make sure it is out of the face.

To finish, spray Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray all over to hold the style.
