This week David Beckham announced he would be retiring

Feeling sad about David Beckham’s retirement from Football? Us too, which is why we’ve asked some of the UK’s top hairdressers to pick out their favourite ‘Beckham Barnets’ over his career and their top tips on recreating some of his most famous looks…

Beckham has gone through many hair changes

The Curtains

Rae Palmer, former Southern Hairdresser of the Year shares her tips to recreate David’s 90’s do:

“The current 90s revival means that it’s almost acceptable to re-visit the male hair style that dominated the period. Beware – only the very young and trendy can pull this look off and even then only as an ironic nod to the era. Using plenty of gel make a rough centre parting and pull hair forward at the front and slick down at the back. Hair needs to have a bit of length for this to work.”

The Goldilocks

Organic Colour Specialist Karine Jackson shares her expert advice to go blonde just like Becks:

This metrosexual look might be a bit high maintenance for some men but great if you feel like going blonde for summer. For best results go and have a professional consultation. David went a bit too blonde for his natural colour here so I’d advise to tone it down and stay within 3 shades of your natural colour, your stylist will use a colour fan to find the best shade. Use a gentle colour with no ammonia – I recommend Organic Colour Systems – it uses heat to open the hair’s cuticles to absorb the colour instead of ammonia so is much less drying.”

The Mohawk

Ken Picton, the current Wales & South West hairdresser of the Year tells us how to get Beckham’s iconic look:

“This is probably the least maintenance out of all of Beckham’s do’s, but make sure you visit the salon to get it cut and avoid the

temptation of taking a shaver to your own head unless you want it lopsided! Once it’s cut the styling will be minimal, maybe some hair gel or spray in the morning if anything but that’s it.”

The Normal One

Darren Ambrose, 3 times winner of the British Hairdressing Awards Avant Garde category tells us how to copy Beckham’s current (and arguably most wearable) style:

“This super modern cut suits most men, ask your stylist to keep the sides short with lots of length on top, this might mean leaving your hair to grow out for a few weeks first. To style blow dry the long section with a volume spray and then slick back.  Finish with hairspray to keep everything in place.”
