Taylor Swift looked beautiful in Elie Saab last night at the Brits

The red carpet saw some fabulous looks at the annual BRIT awards; here our award-winning hairdressers talk pop’s finest:

Lana Del Rey

“Lana’s loose, long chunky plait looks great”, says multi award winning hairdresser Darren Ambrose (www.djambrose.com). “Her single shade dark hair means it’s easy to plait in extra wefts of hair to get this length. It’s a far cry from her glamorous sixties look but it works.”

Ashley Roberts and Rita Ora

“Ashley’s topknot and Rita’s bun are gorgeously relaxed updos,” says Rae Palmer, Redken ambassador (www.raepalmer.co.uk). To get Ashley’s topknot, pull hair into a high ponytail, leaving out the front section. Twist around, securing around a doughnut to get a fuller finish. Plait the front section up and into the topknot. For Rita’s bun, secure hair back, twisting around and securing round some padding leaving the front section out. Backcomb the front section then pull over to the side, finishing with some hairspray to secure. Blonde hair always looks great in this sort of disheveled style because you can see the variations in tone.”

Jessie J, Jourdan Dunn and Taylor Swift

“Flying the flag for poker straight locks, Jessie J and Jourdan Dunn show how gorgeous sleek straight locks are!” says British Colourist of the Year Ken Picton (www.kenpicton.com). “To get the look, use an oil based product such as Shu Uemura’s Essence Absolue, blow dry straight and then finish with irons; the new GHD Eclipse irons are incredible and the perfect tool for this look. For an extra glam look, slip on an Effortless Extension – a hair piece on a wire that takes seconds to add in (www.effortlessextensions.co.uk). I really love Jessie with this more natural style, it looks great. Taylor Swift works a variation on the look with a bit of movement through the lengths – give your irons a flick as you run them through to get this body.”

Katherine Jenkins & Denise Van Outen

“Katherine Jenkins may have missed the mark on the fashion front but her hair is bang on trend” says Karine Jackson, organic colour specialist (www.karinejackson.co.uk). “This slicked back side and height on top first appeared on the catwalks at Prada and in the pages of Vogue and has fast become a firm favourite in the salon. Backcomb the front, then slick back the sides with gel (I like Organic Colour Systems because it’s free from plastic) and a comb, setting with your dryer on the slowest speed. Denise Van Outen also showed off height and sleek sides with a ponytail – I just love this look.”
