Backstage at Vivienne Westwood SS14

A Vivienne Westwood runway is always going to be a show, and this time, for the Gold Label Spring Summer 14 collection, the models took on the role of Pilgrims.

Inspired by those ordered earlier worlds - Vivienne thought of the pagan Greek, a young male pilgrim walking to the shrine of Apollo in his noble nakedness, his cloak, hat and staff. This image was used for the show invitation. Within her press release Vivienne spoke of the collection and models as ‘medieval pilgrims on their journey (they) must be austere, serious and festive each wearing her most important clothes.’

The hair, styled by global ghd creative director Sam McKnight and his team, reflected this theme and created hair reminiscent of Greek statues. Backcombing was key to ensuring glorious height was present in the hair creating tall statuesque silhouettes. The ghd eclipse styler was used to style soft curls and hair was teased and pinned at the front to form the look of a tiara head-dress, again mirroring the theme of the collection.

“The ghd eclipse styler was the key tool to create the curl and movement for this look, setting the hair firmly in place to create a Grecian head-dress with a slightly dishevelled texture.” Sam McKnight.

GET THE LOOK:

Using the ghd tail comb, take out the hairline from temple to temple, leaving a soft airy section around the hairline. Top tip: personalise the amount of hair depending on hair’s density, i.e. 1cm for thick hair and a little more for finer hair.

Gather all the remaining hair into a high pony at the top of the head, using the ghd oval dressing brush to smooth for a sleek finish. Secure with an elastic band.

Take small sections of hair from the pony at a time and wrap around one finger. Once wrapped, gently release your finger holding the curl in place. Using the ghd eclipse styler, close onto the curl and hold for approximately five seconds, then pin up and leave to cool.

Once repeated throughout the whole ponytail, release the pins and brush through the hair to free all movement and soften the curls. Backcomb at the roots using the ghd tail comb to create extra volume and give a light fluffy texture to the hair.

Taking small sections, pin and tease the hair forward and upwards, creating a tiara shaped head-dress with the hair piled high. Top tip: try to keep the sides of the ‘head-dress’ flat, almost box shaped and the front slightly peaked and dishevelled.

Spray the whole style with hairspray to the point that hair is almost wet and wrap with a hairnet. Ensure the sides are kept tight to the head and the front elevated to create the tiara shape. Next, use your ghd air hairdryer to set the shape in place, making use of the cool shot button.

Finally, run the ghd eclipse styler over the remaining hair underneath creating a smooth, wispy finish.
