Shailene Woodley recently chopped her hair

Chopping your hair off is not a decision that comes lightly, you need to consider all of your options and whether it's something that you really want to do.

Jennifer Connelly recently stunned by cutting hers all off, after having the same style for 15 years, and Shailene Woodley also went for the chop for an upcoming film role.

But the question is would you ever do it?

Russell McGrath from the Michael Van Clarke Salon in Marylebone talks us through the things that you need to think about before you go for the chop.

DON’T DO IT ON IMPULSE

Research your options and then select a great hairdresser for your new look. Don’t be tempted to cut or dye your hair yourself on impulse or while emotions are running high.

After all, if a DIY job goes wrong, you might need to have an expensive correction at a salon anyway!

DO TALK TO A PROFESSIONAL

When thinking about cutting or colouring your hair, always speak to a professional – they will consider what's realistically achievable.

A good hairdresser will take into account your lifestyle and personality – all these things will affect what suits you best.

DON’T NECESSARILY STICK TO THE SAME COLOUR

Remember that your skin tone changes over time. You may once have had very dark, striking hair but as you mature you will need to look at softer hair colour tones and styles to avoid an ageing look.

Using vegetable dyes will allow you to change colour without damaging your hair so research dye options before taking the plunge.

DO REMEMBER YOUR FACE SHAPE CHANGES

Your face shape will change over the years so look at which hair styles will suit you with this in mind.

Talk this through with your hairdresser as they should have a great understanding of what cuts best flatter every face shape imaginable!

DON’T RELY ON WORDS

Always bring in pictures of styles you like so you can discuss your thoughts and take on board their advice. A picture paints a thousand words!

Don’t be disheartened if your stylist doesn’t feel a look is right for you. A good hairdresser will work with you to find a style that will flatter you and make you happy.
