Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman

The subject of Wonder Woman and her style is very topical at the moment, because next year sees the release of a new animated film, featuring our favourite cartoon hero and her blue sparkly hotpants.

She's been portrayed in various different guises over the years, both in cartoon and human form, but initially she was created as a cartoon in 1941 by DC comics.

Wonder Woman is a member of an all-female tribe, known as the Amazons. She has been sent away to a "man's world" as an ambassador, and takes on the identity of Diana Prince.

Her powers include having super strength, being able to fly and can take part in hand to hand combat. She also has a Lasso of Truth, which forces those bound by it to tell the truth, a pair of bullet-deflecting bracelets, and an invisible plane.

Well, she's called 'Wonder Woman' for a reason undoubtedly, but it's her status as something of a fashion icon that we're really interested in. The Wonder Woman outfit consists of a red and gold corset, blue hotpants peppered with white stars and a sort of headband crown of gold.

It's a popular fancy dress costume, that most of us would fully admit to have worn at one time or another, but would it work as an actual outfit on a night out?

Strangley enough, we could envisage the hotpants becoming quite a big hit if they ever became available, as this season's Circus trend just keeps gaining momentum, and those who were brave enough to give it go would find themselves looking pretty cool this festive season.

We're not saying the whole outfit would work as a party look, but drawing inspiration from Wonder Woman's style could put you one step ahead of the fashion pack next season, as corsets too have made something of a comeback this year.

Sienna Miller caused a stir a few years ago, when she teamed a wooly jumper and huge black granny pants over her tights; was her fashion sense a hint of things to come?

Well, Katy Perry paid homage to Wonder Woman at the VMA's in September, in a almost exact replica of her costume and she was proclaimed a fashion hit, so clearly Katy had some insider information.

Either that or Wonder Woman is, what we've believed all along, a true cartoon style icon.
