Michelle Obama on the March 2009 Cover of Vogue

It was the worst kept secret in fashion and now Michelle Obama's Vogue cover has been released.

The First Lady was photographed for the March issue by Annie Leibovitz at the Hay-Adams Hotel during the presidential inauguration, WWD reports. She is wearing a bright pink silk dress by Jason Wu, the same designer who made her white gown for the inaugural balls.

All of the new First Ladies have been interviewed by Vogue since 1929 but Michelle is only the second to grace the cover of the fashion bible, following in the footsteps of Hillary Clinton in 1998.

Vogue's editor at large André Leon Talley told WWD: "It’s a wonderful achievement for Vogue."

He added that Michelle's picture "absolutely reflects who she is without any questions. There’s such a warmth that she emanates. It’s the warmest cover you’ve seen in a long time on Vogue. Models pose, actresses pose. This is a real woman."

Michelle chose her own look for the shoot, which appear in a eight page spread, they included a black Narciso Rodriguez dress and a J. Crew cardigan, top and skirt ensemble.

She talks about her love of fashion saying: "I love clothes. First and foremost, I wear what I love."
