Pope Benedict has been slammed by animal rights activists for wearing fur.

A petition has been launched by the Italian Association for the Defence of Animals and the Environment about the Holy One's use of animal furs- and already it has over 2,000 signatures, according to the Guardian.

The Pope's fondness of fur was defended yesterday by Cardinal Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo reports the newspaper. He asked: "Aren't there more important battles to wage?"

"There are human beings who merit more urgent assistance that no one is taking care of. And if we eat animals, we can wear them."

The petition is calling for the Pope to lead by example and use synthetic faux fur materials on the trim of his robes and hats.
