Karl Lagerfeld and Coco Chanel have inspired a remake of 18th century comic opera, 'Platée'.

The 80-year-old fashion designer and current creative director of Chanel has a lookalike playing Jupiter, the king of the Gods, in Robert Carsen's adaptation of Jean-Philippe Rameau's original work, WWD is reporting.

The actor wears his white hair in a ponytail and dons dark sunglasses and leather trousers, Karl's sombre signature look, as he takes to the stage using Chanel's famous mirrored staircase.

Meanwhile, Jupiter's wife Juno is made to resemble Coco Chanel and is dressed head-to-toe in tweed.

The performance tells the story of Platée, an ugly water nymph, who is under the impression Jupiter is in love with her, only to find he's using her to cure Juno of her jealousy.

Rameau wrote the original piece for the wedding of Louis, Dauphin of France, and Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain, and it was first performed in 1745 in Versailles.

The play premiered in Vienna last week is also running in Paris, before taking to the stage next month at New York City's Lincoln Center.
