Balmain SS09

Balmain SS09

They were all over the AW09 catwalks recently, so it's useless trying to fight it any longer- exaggerated shoulders are officially the big thing for summer.

If that wasn't enough, they are set to be making waves come winter time too, thanks to the latest runway looks sported by Zac Posen, Balmain and Louis Vuitton.

After Balmain ruled supreme for the summer with their big shoulder dresses, taken straight out of the 80s fashion book, we were a little uncertain of the impact they would have on the high-street.

Well, a big one as it happens, as they are apparently loving this shoulder pad trend, but they are instead focusing on jackets and tuxedo jackets, rather than dresses and tops.

Some of the looks sported on the catwalk were a little extreme, so much so that we'd probably get laughed at in the street if we decided to sample them, so is this a trend we can actually work into every day life?

Yes, it is a workable trend, but you just need to know which style works for you, and don't be afraid to step a bit out of your comfort zone.

Work a spring trench with slightly bigger shoulders than you're used to, or don a military jacket with skinny jeans and sandals, while out shopping with friends.

Then there is the stylish tuxedo jacket as sported by Heidi Klum and Kate Moss recently. Chic, fashionable and with defined shoulders, it's the perfect day to night look, which will make you stand out from the crowd.

Here's out pick of the best exaggerated jackets on the high-street...

Boyfriend Blazer, £55, Topshop; Belted Mac, £60, Miss Selfridge; Tuxedo Jacket, £75, Warehouse
