1970s hippy chic at Diane Von Furstenberg

1970s hippy chic at Diane Von Furstenberg

With Mother's Day coming up this weekend, Female First thought it was fitting to take a look at why your mum may be more fashionable than you at the moment.

Whether it's cast-offs from the 1970s or 1980s left-overs a rummage through your mum's wardrobe could be very worthwhile. Diane Von Furstenberg brought 60s and 70s hippy chic back to life on the catwalk and Balmain and Giles sparked an eighties retro revival.

Stonewash and ripped jeans, courtesy of the 1980s are back with a vengeance, as are the decades bright colours like neon yellow and hot pink. Even Victoria Beckham has been sporting the fuchsia shade!

Jumpsuits are also having a massive fashion moment and they were big news in the 70s. Forget nipping to Topshop for your pair, check out your Mum's old clothes for an original, vintage pair. Instead of going for a fitted one, it's more flattering to go baggy and nip it in with a belt. Strapless jumpsuits are great for evening wear instead of a standard little black dress.

Hippy style fringing is everywhere at the moment and one of our style-crushes, Vanessa Hudgens has been working the look to great effect! If your mum was a bit of a hippy in the past, dig out her fringed lovelies for yourself.

Another 80s throwback that is re-emerging is big shoulders. We're not too taken with this look at the moment but who are we to argue with Balmain, Dolce and Gabbanna and Louis Vuitton. Shoulders are bigger and boxier than back in your mum's day though so if you're going to steal some of her old jackets you might want to sew a few more pads in for added height.

So make sure you tell your mum what a style icon she is on Sunday, surely that's better than any present!
