One in three Brits are unaware of the hidden alcohol units they will consume this Christmas, making the season of merrymaking a dangerous time for drivers, warns esure car insurance. December is the official party season and a massive 78 % of motorists will be socialising and drinking at least once or twice a week throughout this month.

Indeed, one in five UK motorists admit to drinking a worrying 3-4 times per week during December, with 57 % drinking in excess of 3 units every time they socialise.

In addition to the estimated 3 billion units of alcohol that will be drunk over the Christmas period, over half of the UK’s adults will unwittingly tuck into alcoholic Christmas puddings (58%) and Irish coffees (18%), while nearly a third (29%) will eat at least one portion of sherry trifle.

These alcohol-laced food and drinks can cause people to underestimate the amount of alcohol they have actually consumed and may still be in their systems when they need to drive either later that day or the following morning. Approximately 300 million units of alcohol will be drunk on Christmas day alone and nearly one third of the driving population .. approximately 6.3 million motorists .. say they plan to get behind the wheel on Boxing Day.

So that it, cancel the chocolate liquors as 40 will equate to 0.3 units of alcohol and I must remind my mother to be less liberal with her blindly potent rum sauce over the Christmas pud.

That’s the spirit of Christmas for you.
