Three years later The Empire Strikes Back hit the big screen before the trilogy reached an epic climax in 1983 with Return of the Jedi.
After a sixteen year hiatus Lucas was back as be kicked off a new trio of films with The Phantom Menace.
The series was set before events in A New Hope and saw the likes of Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor on the cast list.
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is the most successful film in the franchise as it took just over $1billion at the global box office.
While the subsequent two movies didn't enjoy that level of box office or critical success the franchise was brought to a close for a second time in 2005.
Lucas took the franchise into animation in 2008 with the release of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
But the franchise will return in 2014 with the first of three planned new Star Wars movies.
This year LucasFilm was sold to Disney for a whopping $4.05 billion and the franchise is now set to continue.
