Pretty Woman

Pretty Woman

Pretty Woman's Big Mistake scene has been voted the nation's best movie moment.

The iconic scene shows Vivienne, played by Julia Roberts, gloriously exacting revenge on a snooty sales assistant on Hollywood’s Rodeo Drive.

The 1990 film shot Julia Roberts to fame and A-list star status. Roberts went on to win a Golden Globe and received an Oscar nomination for her unforgettable role as Vivienne.

Revealing a colourful insight into the country’s favourite film scenes, the poll conducted to launch TCM’s ‘Capture Your Classic’ campaign  establishes that scenes featuring passion, suspense, eccentricity and escapism are what Brits seek in a memorable movie moment. Vivienne’s decadent shopping spree provides the ultimate in film escapism during the current credit crunch!

The top five film scenes in order, as chosen in the nationwide survey commissioned by TCM, are:

1. Pretty Woman - ‘Big mistake, huge!' (starring Julia Roberts / Richard Gere)

After the snooty sales assistant failed to help Vivienne failed to help her find something suitable to wear she stoles back into the boutique carrying bags of expensive purchases before declaring 'Big mistake...big...huge.'

2. When Harry Met Sally - 'Ohh yes yes yes!' (starring Meg Ryan / Billy Crystal)

The fake orgasm scene in comedy When Harry met Sally which, can you believe was released way back in 1989, still remains one of cinema's best ever moments.

'I'll have whatever she's having' has gone on to be one of the most famous lines of all time.

3. The Shining - ‘Here’s Johnny’ (starring Jack Nicholson)

The Shining is still ranked as one of the best horror movies of all time as Jack Torrance, a somewhat tortured writer, is driven mad by ghosts and tries to murder his wife and son.

4. The Terminator - ‘I’ll be back’ (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger)

It's hard to believe that when Schwarzenegger went for the role of terminator he was told that a baddie role would harm his career, instead auditioning for the role of Kyle Reese.

Funny how things work out as Terminator remains one of the actors most famous parts and that line synonymous with this film franchise.

5. Withnail  & I - ‘Finest wines in humanity’  (starring Richard. E. Grant)

Perhaps one of the strangest scenes to make it to the list but Withnail & I is one of the most under-appreciated British movies of all time, and a total classic and has gained a cult following.
