Beyonce Knowles

Beyonce Knowles shot to fame as the lead singer of girl-group Destiny's Child, a group that went on to huge success all over the world.

This success continued for Knowles as she left her Destiny's Child girls behind her to embark on a solo career - she is now one of the world's most famous recording artists.

But it seems that the singing sensation isn't happy with just one career oh no as she branched out, like so many do, into the world of acting.

But before you laugh and scorn Knowles hasn't fallen flat on her face like Madonna and Britney Spears and has put in a couple of very credible performances.

Her first acting role came in 2001 when she landed a role in the made for MTV movie Carmen: A Hip Hopera, version of Bizet's opera is updated for the hip-hop generation.

The movie followed Mekhi Phifer, a young police cadet who falls under the spell of the stunning beauty Carmen, played by Knowles.

Despite the likes of Knowles, Phifer and Mos Def on the cast list the movie was received negatively by the critics.

However this didn't put the singer off acting as she made her big screen debut in 2002 in Austin Powers in Goldmember.

She took on the role of Foxxy Cleopatra in the third movie in the Austin Powers franchise, which saw Mike Myers reprise the lead role.

The movie was a box office success grossing over $296 million, slightly down on it's predecessor but still managing to break the opening weekend record for a spoof movie in the UK.

She teamed up with Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr next for romantic comedy The Fighting Temptations in 2003, which was a moderate hit.

Although she returned to comedy with The Pink Panther in 2006 it was her performance in Dreamgirls later that same year that proved to be her breakthrough role as an actress.

She joined an all star line-up of Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy, an adaptation of the 1981 musical.

Set in 1960s Detroit Dreamgirls follows the rise of local girl band The Dreamettes and the relationships and friendships that are put to the test under the pressures of success.

The movie was a critical and commercial hit and went on to receive eight Oscar nominations, however it failed to secure a nomination for Best Picture.

Jennifer Hudson scooped Best Supporting Actress while the film also picked up a gong for Sound Mixing.

Knowles stayed with the music picture for her next project when she starred in Cadillac Records that followed the career of Leonard Chess and the singer signed to Chess Record.  Knowles took on the role of Etta James.

This week she returns to the big screen in Obsessed, a movie that topped the American box office.

Starring alongside Idris Elba Obsessed follows Derek Charles is a successful, married businessman. Things are looking up for him after receiving a promotion and his marriage to his wife Lisa (Knowles), couldn't be better.

His life is complicated however, when Lisa (Ali Larter), arrives at his job as a temp worker.

After flirting and arguably encouraging attention from Lisa, she starts stalking him, which puts his personal, as well as his professional life in jeopardy and destroying his ideal world.

Obsessed is released 29th May
