Red Tails

Red Tails

We have already celebrated the movies that have been a huge box office success in 2012 but where there is a hit there is always a flop.

Yes there have been a string of movies that have performed poorly during their theatrical release and we take a look at some of the films that missed the mark.

Red Tails was brought to the big screen by LucasFilm and was a passion piece for George Lucas as he teamed up with director Anthony Hemingway.

The movie followed a group of Tuskegee Airmen and the prejudices that they faced as they tried to serve their country in the Second World War.

Despite a cast list that included Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr and Terrence Howard the movie failed to win over the critics and struggled at the box office.

The movie had a budget of $58 million but it only grossed $49.8 million worldwide and so was one of the films that lost money.

Jennifer Aniston was back on the big screen this year with Wanderlust as she teamed up with Paul Rudd and directed by David Wain.

Rudd and Aniston played a married couple who after leave their live in New York after sudden unemployment and they find themselves living in a commune in Georgia.

Despite the comic talents of Aniston and Rudd as well as Justin Theroux, Alan Alda and Malin Akerman on the cast lists the movie really struggled in theatres.

The film had quite a modest budget of $35 million and yet it failed to make it back as it took $21.4 million.

That’s My Boy is another comedy that struggled at the box office when it was released this year as Adam Sandler returned.

The film was directed by Sean Anders and follows Donny who reappears in this son’s life just before his wedding.

Andy Samberg and Leighton Meester were also on the cast list but the comedy failed to win over critics and audiences.

Sandler has always enjoyed box office success, particularly in the U.S., but it wasn’t to be with this project as it failed to make back its $70 million - taking just $57.7 million worldwide.

It has not been a great year for Drew Barrymore as Big Miracle as the film failed to make back its budget at the box office.

The movie was based on the 1989 book Freeing the Whales and was about the international effort to rescue whales trapped in ice near point Barrow in Alaska in 1988.

Despite it being an emotional true story the movie only took $24.7 million worldwide - it had a $30-40 million budget.

Adam Shankman was behind one of the best musical movies of 2007 in the form of Hairspray and so a rock version was a highly anticipated release.

However Rock of Ages failed to capture the magic of Hairspray despite the all star cast that included Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta Jones and Russell Brand.

The film may have had some great musical numbers but it offered little more and it under whelmed just about everyone who saw it.
The film has a budget of $75 million but it only brought in $56.3 million when it was released.

Dredd 3D is one of the best movies to hit the big screen this year and yet it did not perform as well as it should have done.

Karl Urban took over the title role from Sylvester Stallone and it was a bloody thirsty action packed movie from start to finish.

The film won the critics over and topped the box office in the UK and yet it was a movie that lost money. It has a $45 million budget and took $36.4 million worldwide.

The likes of A thousand Words, People Like Us and Premium Rush all lost money while Jon Carter was not the big box office success that Disney had hoped for.
