David Nicholls

David Nicholls has enjoyed a literary career that has brought him great success in such a short space of time.

Another Nicholls novel finds itself adapted for the big screen this week as Anne Hathaway & Jim Sturgess join forces for One Day.

Nicholls' debut novel, Starter For Ten,  was released back in 2003 and followed Brian Jackson's first year at university and landing a role on the University Challenge team.

He followed this up with The Understudy two years later but it's One Day that has brought him his biggest success.

The novel was released back in 2009 and followed Emma and Dexter through twenty years of friendship after meeting on graduation.

It was a #1 best seller so it comes as no surprise that the rights were snapped up and movie made.

But Nicholls was not content with just penning novels and has since moved into the world of screenplay writing and movies.

Nicholls himself adapted Starter For Ten for the big screen when it was released back in 2006.

The movie brought together a great British cast of James McAvoy, Dominic Cooper, Alice Even, Rebecca Hall and Catherine Tate.

Despite being received well by the critics the movie struggled at the box office and failed to re-coup it's $8million budget.

Nicholls went on to adapt the Blake Morrison memoir And When Did You Last See Your Father?, which was released in 2007.

It was a moving British drama that starred the likes of Jim Broadbent, Colin Firth, Juliet Stevenson and Gina McKee.

And he was back on screenwriting duties for One Day, once again adapting his own novel for the big screen.

Directed by Lone Scherfig the movie also stars Patricia Clarkson, Jodie Whittaker and Ken Stott and promises to be one of the romance movies of 2011.

After spending the night together on the night of their college graduation Dexter and Em are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives.

They are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day.

And Nicholls has another project in the pipeline as he is adapting Great Expectation for a new version of the story which is set to star Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter.

One Day is released 24th August.
