Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast

Over the years Disney has not only brought us some great movie but some very strong female characters.

And this week Disney returns to the traditional method of animation to produce The Princess And The Frog, and Princess Tiana is the latest heroine to grace the big screen.

The Princess And The Frog is a fairy tale set in Jazz Age-era New Orleans and centred on a young girl named Princess Tiana and her fateful kiss with a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again.

So to celebrate the release of the movie this week we haven taken a look at some of Disney's best leading ladies.

- Belle: Beauty and the Beast

Belle is the book reading beauty who put everyone else, especially the welfare of her father, before herself.

Unselfishly she trade her life for his when he is captured by the Beast for trespassing in his castle. She is sentenced to be locked in the castle with the Beast.

Despite a prickly start between the pair Belle sees beyond the exterior of the Beast to fall in love with the person inside.

- Pocahontas: Pocahontas

Pocahontas is one of the greatest Disney heroines because she went against the racial boundaries that were placed on her to follow her heart.

She is depicted an adventurous girl who violates her father's forbiddance of meeting white people.

Despite defying her people's rules and falling in love with Captain John Smith she shows her selflessness by putting her people before herself. She felt the responsibility to her family and her people and stayed with them.

- Jasmine: Aladdin

Like Pocahontas, Jasmine is another Disney leading lady who rebels against the restrictions that are placed on her.

Despite the pressures placed on her by her father she wants to marry for love and is tiring of her confined life behind the palace walls.

Escaping from the castle Jasmine goes on an adventure through the city of Agrabah where she meets Aladdin.

Jasmine remains one of the most defiant female characters standing up for what she believes in, not being forced to marry. and of course she gets her man hooray!

- Ariel: The Little Mermaid

And it's all about breaking the rules and standing up for what she wants with out next heroine Ariel.

As a mermaid falling in love with a human, yes I'm talking about Eric, you could say is a little tricky. But Ariel put her heart before the word of her father and went to Ursula for legs to be with him.

But what makes Ariel so great is her flawed character as she makes huge mistakes along the way but hung tight to what it was that she wanted.

- Mulan: Mulan

Mulan is one of Disney's greatest heroines as she puts the needs of her family before those of her own.

China is invaded by the Huns and conscription notices are sent out by the Imperial Forces to gather an army.

But Mulan's father has no son to fight so, despite his age and disability, he must fight instead. But Mulan poses as a man and joins the army in her father's place in a bid to protect her country.

Even after being discovered as a woman Mulan still puts the safety of her country before herself  making her one of Disney's strongest female characters.

The Princess And The Frog is released 5th February
