- Elvira Hancock (Michelle Pfeiffer) - Scarface

The role of Elvira Hancock was one of Pfeiffer's early Hollywood roles as she teamed up with Al Pacino in the Brian De Palma movie.

As girlfriend then wife of Tony Montana she gets pulled into a lavish world as well as one of violence and excessive drug use.

After her drug use if blamed on her infertility by Montana she finally has the strength to leave him and this lifestyle behind.

It was a great performance from Pfeiffer and it set her up for great roles in the future.

- Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) - Bonnie and Clyde

Bonnie Parker was no man's bit of on the side as she was packing some heat of her own in Bonnie and Clyde.

Released back in 1967 this remains one of the best gangster movies of all time and Bonnie is one of the best female characters in this genre.

The movie follows their crime spree during Depression hit America and it was a film that broke many taboos such as sex and violence on film.

- Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is one of the best gangster movies to hit the big screen in the last decade and saw Uma Thurman take on the role of Mia Wallace - the wife of Marsellus Wallace played by Ving Rhames.

She is a character that loves to dance and $5 shakes and yet her drug habit almost lands her in the morgue.

There is a real elegance to this role from Thurman and this character became the staple of the promotional side of the film.

It was a role that really catapulted Thurman onto the A-List and from this point on she saw her career soar.

- Victoria (Helen Mirren) - The Long Good Friday

The Long Good Friday remains one of the greatest British gangster movies of all time as Helen Mirren teamed up with Bob Hoskins.

Mirren plays Victoria the long suffering girlfriend of Harold Shand a London gangster who is struggling to move with the times.

But when Shand begins to lose his power Victoria finds herself caught in the middle.

It was a breakthrough role for Hoskins and it was a real change of role for Mirren.

- Grace Faraday (Emma Stone) - Gangster Squad

Emma Stone is the leading lady that we will be looking out for when Gangster Squad hits the big screen tomorrow.

The character of Grace Faraday is the girlfriend of gangster Mickey Cohen, who sets out to take over the streets of L.A.

But her head is turned by cop Jerry Wooters, played by Ryan Gosling, who has been given the task of getting the gangsters out of the city.

Gangster Squad is released 10th January
