Good Will Hunting

Good Will Hunting

Ben Affleck has made quite a name for himself in the last few years as a major force behind the camera - not bad seeing as he has only directed two movies.

But this week sees him direct and star in a third as Argo, which is being tipped as a major awards player, hits the big screen.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we are taking a look at some of Ben Affleck's finest movie moments... and we are starting with the fantastic Good Will Hunting.

It was March 1998 when Good Will Hunting hit UK cinema screens after whipping up a storm in the States.

It was with this movie that Affleck and buddy Matt Damon really gained attention as the pair penned the screenplay.

It was originally set to be a thriller but advice from Rob Reiner saw them drop that aspect of the story and focus on the relationship between Will Hunting (played by Damon) and his psychologist Dr Sean Maguire (Robin Williams).

That change proved to be a good one as Good Will Hunting became an emotional and powerful screenplay that had that extra punch of being set in reality.

Will Hunting is a man who is torn between his life and what his could be as he tries to play down his genius.

He is being torn in all directions by Dr Maguire, girlfriend, mathematician Professor Gerald Lambeau and friend Chuckie and this is a film about deciding what he wants and finding his own way.

The film is made up predominately of these intense sessions between Will and Dr Maguire - who is just as damaged and haunted by the past.

These two towering performances from Damon and Williams really bring the screenplay to life as they breath real pain and anguish into these two central characters.

Affleck himself may have taken a supporting role in the movie but he and Damon created a script and a set of characters that really touched audiences.

The movie was a commercial success as it went on to make in excess of $225 million at the global box office - not bad for a film that was made for $10 million.

But it was also nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two; Best Supporting Actor for Williams and Best Original Screenplay for Affleck and Damon.

Good Will Hunting was a movie that really showed off the writing prowess of Affleck - a talent that he has demonstrated in his early directing work.
