Jim Broadbent

Jim Broadbent

Jim Broadbent has enjoyed a career that has spanned decades and seen him tackle many different mediums.

He is back this week with his new movie The Iron Lady, a biopic of Margaret Thatcher in which he plays her husband Denis.

To celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of Broadbent's best performances from the last decade.

- Longford

One of Broadbent's most challenging roles came in 2006 when he took on the title role in this TV drama.

The movie followed Labour Party peer Lord Longford as he battled for the parole of murderer Myra Hindley, played by Samantha Morton.

While the movie did tackle a very sensitive subject the central performances of both Broadbent and Morton were highly praised.

Longford went on to receive Official Selection for Best Dramatic Picture at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival while Broadbent himself won the Best Actor Bafta for his performance.

- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

In 2009 Broadbent became the latest British actor to land a role in the Harry Potter franchise when he took on the role of Horace Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

It was the sixth instalment of the franchise that saw David Yates at the helm.

The film was another colossal success as it went on to gross in excess of $934 million at the global box office.

Broadbent would reprise the role in the final instalment Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

- Any Human Heart

In 2010 Broadbent returned to TV when he starred alongside Matthew Macfadyen in Any Human Heart.

A novelist's life ricochets from 1920s Paris to '50s New York and '80s London. Along the way he meets Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor - the exiled British king and his mistress Wallis Simpson.

It was another great and emotional performance from Broadbent and the movie was met well by the critics when it was aired on Channel 4.

The series went on to win a much deserved Bafta.

- Another Year

But Broadbent was back on the big screen in 2010 with Another Year, which was directed by Mike Leigh.

The movie was a look at four seasons in the lives of a happily married couple and their relationships with their family and friends.

This was a charming movie that looked at everyday life and relationships as well as exploring getting old and the bonds on family and friendship.

Broadbent can't seem to help but turn out really great performances and he was nominated for Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards.

- Arthur Christmas

At the end of 2011 Broadbent lent his voice to animation as Arthur Christmas hit the big screen.

If you didn't catch this movie then it really is worth a look as it is fun for the whole family.

It's charming and exciting, moving and funny - everything that a top quality festive movie should be.

- The Iron Lady

And this week the biopic movie has come calling in the form of The Iron Lady, which looks at the path to power of Margaret Thatcher and what she sacrificed to get there.

The Iron Lady is already being called the film event of the year - and the Academy always love a good biopic!
