Rebecca Hall in The Awakening

Rebecca Hall in The Awakening

Rebecca Hall is one of the finest British actresses currently working in movies and she is back on the big screen this week with her new project The Awakening.

The movie sees her team up with Dominic West and Imelda Staunton and promises to be quite a creepy watch.

Hall's acting career really began on the stage making her debut performance in Mrs Warren's Profession, a performance which won her the Ian Charleson Award back in 2003. However she had appeared in The Camomile Lawn in 1992.

But her big screen debut came in 2006 when she starred alongside the another fresh faced British actor James McAvoy in the film adaptation of David Nicholls' Starter for Ten.

However it was her role as Vicky in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona that proved to be her breakthrough roles - picking up a Golden Globe nomination for her central performance.

As she has seen her career prosper she has not turned her back on television as she has continued to mix and match her roles.

She followed up Vicky Cristina Barcelona with Doran Gray and Frost/Nixon as well as appearing on the small screen in Einstein and Eddington and the critically acclaimed Red Riding.

She turned in a superb performance in The Town twelve months ago - a movie which brought the best out of its very talented cast that included Jeremy Renner and Ben Affleck; who also directed.

2011 has been a reasonably quiet year with only Everything Must Go under her belt… until this week that is.

The Awakening marks the feature length debut for filmmaker Nick Murphy as Hall takes on the central role of Florence Cathcart.

In post-World War I England in 1921, an author and paranormal sceptic (Hall) is invited to a countryside boarding school by the head master (West) to investigate rumours of an apparent haunting.

But just when she thinks she has debunked the ghost theory, she has a chilling encounter which makes her question all her rational beliefs.

The Awakening is her first major lead role since working with Woody Allen and it’s great to see her take on a major role once more.

And next year is set to be busy for the actress as she has already completed work on Lay The Favourite - which also stars Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta Jones and Vince Vaughn.

She will not just be sticking to movies either in 2012 as she is set to return to TV with Parade’s End.

The Awakening is released 11th November
