This week it's the turn of The Soloist, at long last, and Surrogates to hit cinemas around the country and it's time to take a look at the movies that are currently in the pipeline.

- After the success of Twilight last year and New Moon looking like it could be one of the biggest movies of the 2009 Stephenie Meyer's novel The Host will also be made into a movie.

Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz have picked up the rights to the book and Andrew Niccol will write and direct the movie.

The sci-fi story is set in the future and follows an alien who takes over a human body, Mel, as a host and removing all the emotions and memories.

But when the alien, whose name is Wanderer, wakes up in her new body she shocked at how strong Mel's memories are as she refuses to give up her mind to her host.

- David Cronenberg is to remake his own movie The Fly.

The movie was originally released back in 1986 and was based on Kurt Neumann's 1958 picture and starred Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis.

The filmmaker hasn't made a movie since the success of Eastern Promises in 2007 but The Fly is just one of several projects in the pipeline; The Talking Cure, The Matarese Circle and Cosmopolis are also on the agenda for Cronenberg.

- We may have all played with Barbie as a child but she will soon be coming to the big screen as Mattel have made a deal with Universal to make a live action movie based on the toy.

As of yet there is no script for the movie but, according to Variety, Laurence Mark will take on the role of producer. They are also yet to announce a director.

- Despite opening to bad reviews and performing poorly at the box office a second Ghost Rider movie is in development.

David Goyer is reportedly in talks with Columbia to create the story, with Nicolas Cage expected to return in the lead role.

Former Marvel president Avi Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul are producing with Gary Foster on executive producing duties.

There were no hints as to what the script could contain.

- Bryan Singer is to direct Jack The Giant Killer.

The movie is a remake of the 1962 movie and the script has been penned by Die Hard 4.0 writer Mark Bomback.

The Hollywood Reporter has claimed that the movie will follow a young farmer as he journeys into a giant's lair to save a princess who has been kidnapped.

It's a busy time for Singer who is attached to a series of projects including Excalibur and Battlestar Galactica.

- The cast list for Thor, the latest Marvel comic book character to make it to the big screen, is getting bigger as Jaimie Alexander and Colm Feore are aboard the project.

The movie looks set to focus on Thor whose reckless behaviour causes an ancient war to re-ignite. As punishment for his action he is sent to earth where he must live with the human race.

Chris Hemsworth has already been cast in the lead role but Alexander will play Sif, a skilled warrior, while Feore is expected to play the movie's villain.

Also on the cast list is Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Thor's human lover, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

Kenneth Branagh is on directing duties.

- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button filmmaker David Fincher is set to return with The Social Network, a film based on Facebook.

And this week the film's cast list has been announced with Jesse Eisenberg taking on the role of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, while Justin Timberlake has landed the role of Napster co-founder Sean Parker.

Filming on the movie is expected to get underway next month.
