Top Gun

Top Gun

Tony Scott enjoyed a long and very successful career that saw him become one of the best action filmmakers.

To celebrate his career we take a look at some of his best movies that have graced the big screen over the years.

- True Romance

True Romance is a real gem of a movie and one of Scott's films that sometimes gets a little overlooked.

But it's my personal fave and it saw Christian Slater team up with Patricia Arquette while Quentin Tarantino penned the script.

Arquette and Slater sizzle together as the misfit couple who find love. But it's the ensemble cast of Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman and Val Kilmer that make the movie so memorable.

Scott delivered a gutsy and exciting picture that sees the likes of Walken and Dennis Hopper make Tarantino's dialogue dance.

- Top Gun

Top Gun was really the movie that put Scott on the map as a filmmaker when it was released in 1986 - going on to be the biggest grossing movie of that year.

Top Gun remains the movie that Scott it most fondly remembered for - and it is a movie that really has endured.

At the time Scott hadn't worked in Hollywood and Tom Cruise wasn't exactly the megastar name that he is now and yet it was a movie that really captured audiences of the eighties.

This is a movie that is packed with action as well as comedy moments and camaraderie and continues to thrill fans nearly thirty years on.

- Enemy Of The State

It was back in 1998 when Scott brought Enemy of the State to the big screen as he teamed up with Will Smith and Gene Hackman.

This all out action thriller is exciting and fast paced from the very beginning and it really was the start for the modern day hi-tech espionage movies.

But Enemy of the State is not all about the action as it is a well written and thought provoking story that looked at political corruption and how far people will go to keep things quiet.

Round that off with some great central performances from the likes of Smith and Hackman and you have a very classy movie indeed.

- The Last Boy Scout

There aren't too many actors that Scott hasn't worked with and back in 1991 he teamed up with Bruce Willis for The Last Boy Scout.

There is just something about the biddy movies of the nineties that you can't help but like - and this is a perfect example.

Scott managed to really find a fine balance between action and comedy - and there are plenty of both.

But it is the central relationship between Willis and Damon Wayans really does push the movie forward - not to mention deliver some of the best moments.

- Crimson Tide

Denzel Washington has been a favourite of Scott's for many years and Crimson Tide was one of their early movies together.

Gene Hackman is the other of the acting heavyweights on this cast list and the movie sees Washington & Hackman go head to head as they both have different ideas about leadership and how to fight a war.

This is a naval warfare at it's greatest as it is an intelligent movie that will grip you from the very start.

Other movies from Scott that you really should check out include The Talking of Pelham 123. Unstoppable and Spy Game.
