The first element of a movie that we see is the artwork - and the poster has to be powerful and eye-catching to grab our attention and spark our attention.

Throughout the year we have been treated to some fab film posters, and we look back over a handful of the best.

- Nebraska

Nebraska was one of the most stark posters of 2013, as it featured just the silhouette of actor Bruce Dern.

The black and white poster is so striking and really quite beautiful - you really don't need to be fancy and flash to grab people's attention.

- The Wolverine

There is a very strong Japanese theme to The Wolverine and that fed into the poster campaign.

There were a series of Japanese painting posters that just feature certain film characters - including Hugh Jackman above.

- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has been one of the most talked about movies of 2013 - when we finally got to see it, it didn't disappoint.

One of the early poster featuring just Jennifer Lawrence was one of the most eye catching images of the year - not to mention it really ramped up the excitement.

- World War Z

World War Z has been one of the surprise films of the year as the zombie movie really was a lot of fun.

One of the film's best moments comes outside of the city of Jerusalem as a mountain of undead are trying to breach the walls if the city - and this people mountain features on this great poster.

- Stoker

I wasn't a huge fan of Stoker when it was released earlier this year, but is did have a couple of really great posters.

This is a hand-drawn poster that is as eerie as it is beautiful.

- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was one of the surprise films of 2011 and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looks set to be another cracker.

The first poster for the film has been released and it is a fantastic head shot of Caesar - the fantastic Andy Serkis is returning to the role.

- Gravity

Gravity has been one of the most wonderful movies that I have seen this year, and an extensive poster campaign was embarked upon this autumn.

This was the most powerful of the series as is just shows the desolation of space and the helplessness that the characters feel when things go wrong.

- Captain America: The Winter Solider

Captain America: The Winter Solider is one of the 2014 movies that I am most looking forward to as Chris Evans returns to the title role.

This new film promises to be bigger than the first and you really get that sense with this poster as there is an epic scope to it.

Other stand out posters of the year include Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Man of Steel.
