Locke

Locke

The Venice International Film Festival is well underway with a whole host of fantastic movies from around the world.

But it is British performers that we are focusing on as there are a handful of actors and directors who have films screening over the next week or so.

So we take a look at the British performers to watch out for and the movies that are on the horizon.

Tom Hardy - Locke

We haven’t seen Tom Hardy since he took on the role of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, but now he is back with a smaller project.

Locke looks set to be a tense crime drama that sees Hardy team up with director Steven Knight; he brought us Hummingbird earlier this summer.

Ivan Locke has worked hard to craft a good life for himself. Tonight, that life will collapse around him.

On the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Ivan receives a phone call that sets in motion a series of events that will unravel his family, job, and soul.

The movie is shot in real time and there are no breaks in the ninety minute film, which looks set to see Hardy at his best.

Stephen Frears, Judi Dench & Steve Coogan - Philomena

It was announced today that Philomena will get its UK premiere at the London Film Festival, but it is part of the Venice line up.

The movie sees Stephen Frears back in the director’s chair as he tells the true story of Philomena Lee; a woman who is searching for the son she was forced to give up for adoption in the fifties.

Philomena is based on a true story and sees Judi Dench take on the title role. Steven Coogan will play Martin Sixsmith; a journalist who helps Philomena in her quest. Coogan has also had a hand in penning the screenplay.

Frears has brought us the likes of The Queen and Tamara Drewe in recent years and this movie sees him return to drama.

Philomena looks set to be one of the most powerful and moving movies of the autumn with terrific central performances from both Dench and Coogan.

Ben Whishaw & Tilda Swinton - The Zero Theorem

The Zero Theorem is one of the autumn movies that I am most looking forward to as it sees Terry Gilliam return to the director’s chair.

It will be his first film since the terrific The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and he returns to the science fiction genre.

Gilliam has always made stylish sci-fi films and The Zero Theorem looks set to continue that fine tradition; it really does promise to be one of the most unique movies that is on the horizon.

Ben Whishaw and Tilda Swinton are just two of the names on an impressive cast list as they team up with Christoph Waltz and Matt Damon.

The move follows a computer hacker who has been given the task of finding the reason for human existence.

Rebecca Hall & Alan Rickman - The Promise

Rebecca Hall has already had a successful summer with Iron Man 3 under her belt, but now she steps away from the big budget blockbuster for her new project, A Promise.

The movie sees her team up with director Patrice Leconte, who has also penned the screenplay for the film.

A Promise is set in Germany before WWI and follows a married who falls in love with her husband’s teacher - but the pair are separated by war.

Alan Rickman is also on the cast list for the film; he has already had a busy year with Gambit and The Butler hitting the big screen.

The Venice Film Festival runs 28th  August - 7th September.
