Gone With The Wind

Gone With The Wind

Friday sees thirties classic The Wizard of Oz return to the big screen having had a 3D makeover, and to celebrate we are looking at some of the best movies from that decade.

Today Gone With The Wind is the film that is under the spotlight, as it was one of the most epic movies of that decade.

Directed by Victor Fleming, Gone With The Wind was based on the novel of the same name by Margaret Mitchell, and saw Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh take on the central roles of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara.

The movie follows the turbulent relationships between Butler and O'Hara during the American Civil War.

Gone With The Wind was released back in 1939 and is one of the greatest movies to have ever hit the big screen.

This was Hollywood at its very best - they really dont' make movies like this anymore - as this was a huge film in size and scale: it is as much a cinematic event today as it was when it was first released.

Gone With The Wind is as much a Civil War movie as it is a romance film, and Fleming captured some stunning visuals that depicted the time: Atlanta on fire is the one that particularly stands out.

Add to that a soaring score and wonderful acting performances; you really do have a film that has endured for a reason. This really is classic Hollywood at its very best.

The up and down relationship between Butler and O'Hara will keep you glued to the story - not to mention will have quoting like such as 'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn' and 'After all, tomorrow is another day!'

Gone with the Wind scored thirteen Oscar nominations and went on to win eight: including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Leigh.

Over seventy years later, Gone with the Wind is still a giant of cinema while Butler and O'Hara are two of film's most iconic characters.

The Wizard of Oz hits the big screen 12th September.
