Johnny Depp

Over the years we have seen some great actor/director partnerships that have resulted in some wonderful movies being made.

To celebrate the release of The Lone Ranger this week we are looking at some of the current actor/director partnerships that are lighting up the big screen.

And it seems only right that we would start with Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski.

The Lone Ranger marks the fifth collaboration for them; it's a movie that also sees them work with Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer once again.

It was back in 2003 that the duo teamed up for the first time as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl hit the big screen.

Now, making a movie based on a theme park ride may sound a little risky, but it turned out to be a stroke of genius.

Verbinski produced a movie that was fast paced, exciting and funny - not to mention a film that killed off the idea that all pirate movies were box office poison - while Depp delivered one of the greatest movie characters of the last decade.

Captain Jack Sparrow proved to be Depp's finest hour, as he went on to be Oscar nominated for his fantastic performance.

While Curse of the Black Pearl is the movie that performed the poorest at the box office - not that you can call in excess of $654 million poor - and yet it remains the best in the franchise.

Depp and Verbinski would reunite for Dead Man's Chest and At World's End in 2006 and 2007.

The franchise proved that it was a box office heavyweight as Dead Man's Chest broke the $1 billion barrier. At World's End didn't do too badly either as it grossed $963 million.

They would switch swashbuckling action for animation for their next project as the worked together on Rango.

Released at the beginning of 2011 the movie followed Rango, a chameleon who accidentally ends up as the new sheriff of town Dirt.

Depp lent his voice to the title character, while Verbinski was tackling the animation genre for the very first time.

The duo had another hit on their hands as it won over audiences as well as critics when it was released.

Not only did it bring in the dough at the box office, but it also won the BEst Animated Film Oscar.

It has been over two years since the success of Rango, and now Depp and Verbinski are back... this time with The Lone Ranger.

The movie sees Depp take on the role of Native American warrior Tonto, as he teams up with John Reid to fight for justice.

Depp and Verbinski are an actor/director partnership that has grossed close to $3 billion at the global box office and seems to be going from strength to strength.

The Lone Ranger is released 9th August.
