Inspired by the video game franchise that was originally developed all the way back in 1992, New Line Cinema's Mortal Kombat movie is sure to capture the imagination of those who have been fans of the series since its inception.

With Simon McQuoid in the director's chair and making his feature directorial debut, audiences will be treated to a film that adapts a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, from a story by Oren Uziel and Russo.

This week, we’ve been treated to our first glimpse of the fan-favourite characters starring in the film, such as Sonya Blade who will be played by Jessica McNamee; Josh Lawson who will take on the villainous yet charming Kano; and Sub-Zero who will be played by Joe Taslim.

Ludi Lin and Max Huang will take on the incomparable duo of Liu Kang and Kung Lao respectively, whilst Hiroyuki Sanada will play Hanzo Hasashi, better known as the nefarious Scorpion. All three are major players in the Mortal Kombat series, so their performances will certainly be ones to keep an eye on!

Rounding out this set of new pictures, we got a look at Supergirl actor Mehcad Brooks in the role of Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs - complete with metal arm - and Lewis Tan as less-recognisable character Cole Young, who has been created for the purposes of the film. It’s going to be very interesting to see just how he will fit into proceedings; and if indeed his character will become a part of the video game series moving forward!

Though we're yet to see them costumed up and in action, we know that Tadanobu Asano will star as Raiden, with Chin Jan as Shang Tsung, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Elissa Cadwell as Nitara and Daniel Nelson as Kabal.

We expect to see New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures ramp up their promotion for the flick in the coming weeks and months, so don’t be surprised if another batch of pictures make their way to the web ahead of a full-length trailer.

This, the third Mortal Kombat big screen adaptation, has been a long time coming. For nearly two decades, fans have been waiting for another venture into the franchise’s various realms, and now they’ll finally be treated to a reboot that, if successful, could pave the way for countless sequels in the near future.

Mortal Kombat doesn't yet have a UK release date, but we'll bring you more news as and when we get it. The film drops on April 16th 2021 in the United States, both in theaters and on streaming service HBO Max.
