Tom Hanks is back at the top of the U.S. box office after claiming the number one spot with Angels & Demons.

The new thriller shot to the top of the new film countdown with an opening weekend take of $48 million .

The film only just piped Star Trek to the top spot - the sci-fi blockbuster took in $43 million during its second weekend on release, but tumbled from last week's (10May09) number one.

Angels & Demons was the second Dan Brown novel to be adapted for the big screen and sees Hanks reprise the role of Robert Langdon and Ron Howard return to the Director's chair.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine dropped one place to be a distant third. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Obsessed both dropped a place to four and five.

1. Angels & Demons - $48 million.

2. Star Trek - $43 million.

3. X-Men Origins: Wolverine - $14.8 million.

4. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past - $6.9 million.

5. Obsessed - $4.6 million.

6. 17 Again - $3.4 million.

7. Monsters vs. Aliens - $3 million.

8. The Soloist - $2.4 million.

9. Next Day Air - $2.2 million.

10. Earth - $1.7 million.
