Bryan Singer has discussed the faults of his 2006 movie Superman Returns.

The X-Men director brought the comic book character back to the big screen five years ago - but the movie did not do as well at the box office as many expected.

Unknown actor Brandon Routh took on the central role of Clark Kent with Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth also on the cast list.

But Singer believes that there were some faults in the movie.

Speaking to VoicesFromKrypton.com. the filmmaker said: "I think that Superman Returns was a bit nostalgic and romantic, and I don't think that was what people were expecting, especially in the summer.

"What I had noticed is that there weren't a lot of women lining up to see a comic book movie, but they were going to line up to see The Devil Wears Prada, which may have been something I wanted to address.

"But when you're making a movie, you're not thinking about that stuff, you're thinking, 'Wow, I want to make a romantic movie that harkens back to the Richard Donner movie that I loved so much.' And that's what I did."

The Superman franchise is set to be re-booted once again as Zack Synder directs and Singer produces.

Henry Cavill will take on the role of Superman alongside Amy Adams, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.
