Casey Affleck has revealed that he was left exhausted after completing work on his new documentary I'm Still Here.

The actor goes behind the camera for the very first time for his documentary that follows Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix as he leaves acting behind for a music career.

He told USA Today: "Making this was satisfying creatively, but exhausting in all other ways. By the end, I was just completely drained. Not only by the experience, but also the experience of putting it together.

"I got through a whole other journey and had my own difficulties. I was pretty new to it. I had done commercials and short films, but I had something like 400 hours of footage and I watched every minute."

"An experience like this was incredibly difficult, but it is a drop in bucket next to 20 years of friendship."

Affleck has enjoyed major critical success in recent years after starring in The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, for which he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and Gone Baby Gone.

The actor was back on the big screen earlier this year in the controversial picture The Killer Inside Me, by director Michael Winterbottom. He is all set to star in The Kind One and The F-Word.

I'm Still Here is released 17th September.
