Catherine Hardwicke has revealed that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson had instant chemistry.

Hardwicke has not been seen in the director's chair since she helmed Twilight back in 2008 but she will be back later this year with Red Riding Hood.

But the director admits that there was an instant 'electricity' between Stewart and Pattinson, who went on to play Bella and Edward, during the audition process.

However Hardwicke had to remind Pattinson that Stewart was only seventeen years old.

Speaking to Newsweek the filmmaker said: "She felt connected to him from the first moment. That electricity, or love at first sight, or whatever it is. Kristen was like, 'It's got to be Rob!'"

"[I said], 'You've got to realise that Kristen is 17 years old. She's underage. You've got to focus, dude, or you're going to be arrested.'"

She added: "I made him swear on a stack of Bibles."

Hardwicke has just completed work on a new take on the popular tale of Red Riding Hood and she has brought together a cast of Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman and Julie Christie.
