Channing Tatum has revealed that the chance to work with filmmaker Kevin MacDonald was one of the main reason he took on The Eagle.

The actor is back on the big screen next month with The Eagle, which follows a Roman soldier guest to find the legion's lost emblem and restore his father's name.

It's the first film for MacDonald since State of Play and Tatum admits that he couldn't wait to work with the director.

Speaking to Collider the actor said: "As a kid, Braveheart and Gladiator are two of my favourite movies of all time. So yes, it’s full fantasy, but really I came to the movie because of Kevin Macdonald.

"Kevin is by far one of the better filmmakers that is out right now or is ever to come. Touching the Void, if you can make almost a reenactment movie that compelling and that engaging, I was head over heels to try to even get in front of him, much less be in one of his movies.

"He does relationships so well that it’s insane. Between Touching the Void and Last King of Scotland, look at that relationship, it’s very similar to Esca and Marcus.

"This script has a very interesting structure to it. It’s not your normal thing. It’s very different. Jamie doesn’t come in until almost the first act break. It’s kind of an odd one.

The Eagle is released 25th March.
