Chris Evans has revealed that he was 'terrified' of taking on the role of Captain America in the new Marvel movie Captain America: The First Avenger.

The actor had already taken on a Marvel Comic character when he starred in The Fantastic Four but admits that he was scared to take on the role this time around.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly the actor said: "I remember telling a buddy of mine, 'If the movie bombs, I'm f**ked. If the movie hits, I'm f**ked!' I was just scared.

"I realised my whole decision-making process was fear-based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear. And so one weekend, I just said, 'F**k it. Let's do it.'"

But once the actor began working on the movie he admits that he settled into the role.

"When I first put on the suit, I was absolutely terrified. But once I started working, I could just see this was going to be a good experience.

"Then I started going, 'Wow. This is really cool.' I can't believe I was almost too chicken to play Captain America."

Evans has agreed a six film deal and will also reprise the role in The Avengers alongside Robert Downey Jr and Chris Hemsworth.

Captain America is released 22nd July 2011.
