Chris Evans has admitted that he didn't agree to take on the role of Captain America right away.

The actor beat off competition from the likes of Ryan Phillippe and Jon Hamm to land the role of the latest marvel character to get the big screen treatment.

But the actor reveals that he was nervous about taking on a big role and weighed everything up before making his final decision.

Speaking to Empire the actor said: "It was a couple of weeks of weighing up all the options. There was certainly a period where I was shying away from the movie.

"It's intimidating. It's pretty daunting. There's certainly a life-changing role there and that was part of the process. Did I want to take this on?

"I like supporting roles, I like the way my life is now and I have the best of both worlds. This would potentially change that. But you know what? This could be a good thing."

Evans, who has already been a part of  Marvel movie franchise with The Fantastic Four, will also star in The Avengers as well as the solo movies.
