Despicable Me

Despicable Me has toppled The Twilight Saga: Eclipse at the top of the U.S. box office after just a single week.

Steve Carell enjoys more success at the box office as the animation movie stormed to the top spot taking over $60.1 million this weekend.

In a happy suburban neighbourhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbours, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout.

Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. (Yes, the moon!) Gru delights in all things wicked.

Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way.

Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.

The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.

Alongside Carell the movie boasts the voice talent of Jason Segal, Julie Andrews and Russell Brand.

After just a week at the top spot The Twilight Saga: Eclipse slipped to number two, taking a further $33.4 million; it has now grossed $456 million in the fortnight that it has been on release, taking $237 million in the U.S. alone.

Adrien Brody moves into the all action movie as his new flick Predators was a new entry at number three. Robert Rodriguez has rebooted the franchise with Nimrod Antal in the director's chair.

Toy Story dropped a single place from three to two while there was a three place drop for The Last Airbender from two to this week's five, it was this week's biggest faller.

There were two place drops foe Grown Ups, Knight & Day, The Karate Kid and The A-Team as they finished the week at six, seven, eight and nine while Cyrus moved up one place from eleven to round of the top ten.
