Eddie Redmayne has described Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe as 'superhuman men'.

The British actor takes on the role of Marius in Les Misérables alongside the two Hollywood A list stars in what is the biggest movie role of his career to date.

And Redmayne admits that it was exciting to be able to work along side the two actors.

Speaking to InStyle the actor said: "They're both superhuman men in real life. And Jean Valjean, Hugh's character, is massive - he lifts carts! Russell is Javert, a policeman who has a vendetta against Jean Valjean."

"In some ways the thread through the movie is, 'Who would win in a fight?' And I love the idea of, 'Who do you cast against Wolverine? Gladiator!'"

Les Misérables has been gaining huge Oscar support over recent weeks and has enjoyed a fantastic opening week at the global box office.

Redmayne is also joined on the cast by Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

The movie has already gathered a whole host of Golden Globe nominations and is expected to be a major Oscar contender

Les Misérables is released 11th January.
