Freida Pinto has chosen mainly American films to work on

Freida Pinto has had to defend herself from those who claim that she has turned her back on Bollywood.

Critics in India claim that since she has risen to fame she has not been in as many native films as she should.

The actress rose to international fame after she starred in 2008's Slumdog Millionaire, with her now-boyfriend Dev Patel.

Since she has appeared in a string of Hollywood and American Indie projects, such as Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and the upcoming films Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Immortals.

But the Mumbai-born actress' blossoming film success is resented back home by critics, who feel that she should be appearing in more Indian movies.

She tells Interview magazine: "I haven't sone a film in India because I haven't found a script that completely gotten my attention and made me passionate to get it made.

"I keep saying I'm not at all famous in my own country, because people do not think I have done anything for India.

"I was upset intially. I guess everybody in India has tried really hard to do what they do and then move into the West...

"The reason why I'm doing these things outside my country, bit by bit, is to be able to come back to India equipped with the knowedge and understanding of how to hopefully produce my own films one fine day."
