Jake Gyllenhaal tried to do as many of the stunts himself on his new movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

The actor takes on the role of Prince Dastan in the latest computer game to be adapted for the big screen but admits that there were times when he had to leave it to the stuntmen.

He told Bang Showbiz: "I did as much of it as I could. There were a few pieces which I couldn't which were really, far, far between.

"All the biggest and best stunts in the movie were done by me. And the most dangerous ones as well.

"I have been studying parkour since I was a young child. It's the perfect role for me because I've always wanted to play a prince.

"Some people may say I am in many ways a princess so playing a prince was fitting.

"No, in reality the majority of the parkour was done by the acrobats. But I did the fundamentals and the landings. Which are the hardest part! On your knees and on other parts of your body."

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which is directed by Mike Newell, is the first big budget blockbuster for Gyllenhaal and he is joined by Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina and Toby Kebbell.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is released 21st May.
