Kenneth Branagh admits that he was 'excited' and 'thrilled to receive The Variety Award at the British Independent Film Awards last night.

2011 has been a year where Branagh has mixed and matched his work moving from directing his first big budget blockbuster with Thor to starring as Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn.

Speaking to The Press Association the actor/filmmaker said: "It is very exciting and thrilling.

"It is very nice to have a prize that has the words 'variety' and 'independence' attached to it because it is what I like to pursue in my work and to be in an atmosphere that people say is the Christmas party for the British film industry."

Despite his success with Thor, Branagh will not be returning to the director's chair for the sequel.
