Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg is set to star in the fourth Transformers movie according to director Michael Bay.

Last month the director denied that Wahlberg was attached to the project but now the Oscar nominated actor is set to lead the franchise in a new direction.

Writing on his official website Bay said: "Mark is awesome. We had a blast working on Pain and Gain, and I'm so fired up to be back working with him.

"An actor of his calibre is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers legacy."

Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon hit the big screen last year and marked Shia LaBeouf's last time out as Sam Witwicky.

Bay was also expected to leave the franchise behind for other projects but the director has since decided to return for a fourth movie.

Wahlberg has been a busy boy this year as he has already completed work on Broken City, Pain & Gain and 2 Guns.

He is currently filming Lone Survivor with Taylor Kitsch and director Peter Berg.

Filming on Transformers 4 is expected to get underway next year for the 2014 release date.
