It has been announced Mark Wahlberg is set to star in a feature film based on the life of international drug dealer Jon Roberts, one of the key figures in Billy Corben’s acclaimed Cocaine Cowboys which is released on DVD in the UK on 4th February. Peter Berg (The Kingdom) will be directing the film.After returning from Vietnam as a decorated soldier, Roberts headed to Miami in the late '70s and formed a relationship with the Medellin drug cartel, distributing cocaine worth billions of dollars. Jon Roberts served a decade in jail for his crimes. The film as yet is untitled.Cocaine Cowboys opened in UK cinemas at the end of November 2007, and sparked huge interest in the UK media, with in-depth features running in publications like Empire, GQ, Loaded and The Sunday Express to name a few.Cocaine Cowboys goes on a fast-paced, adrenaline fueled journey inside the world of the South Florida drug trade and its henchmen known as Cocaine Cowboys. The film explores the business of how cocaine was imported and distributed, the insanely copious amounts of money being made and the violence that consumed the city during this era.With Cocaine Cowboys, award-winning filmmaker Billy Corben paints a dazzling portrait of a cultural explosion that still echoes as Hollywood myth. Corben’s first feature Raw Deal: A Question Of Consent, was a sensation at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Composer of the original Miami Vice theme, Jan Hammer, provides the score for Cocaine Cowboys
