Martin Freeman has called Andy Serkis a 'star'.

The pair are set to share the screen together later this year in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey; Freeman will take over the role of Bilbo Baggins while Serkis is back as Gollum.

And Freeman admits that he thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of working with Serkis on the movie.

Speaking to ITN News the actor said: "They have a great, great, sort of theatrical scene between them where they tell each other riddles. Bilbo's life depends on getting these riddle right and foxing Gollum.

"It's a beautifully written scene in the book, it's beautifully adapted in the film... and I got to work with Andy Serkis being Gollum who is just a star in every regard."

Freeman is one of the new faces on the cast list of Peter Jackson's adaptation while the likes of Ian McKellan, Cate Blanchett and Ian Holm will be following in Serkis' footsteps and be reprising roles.

The role of Bilbo Baggins will be the biggest of Freeman's career so far as the movie is split into a trilogy over the next three years.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released 14th December.
