Peter Jackson

Peter Jackson

Could Peter Jackson be set to direct The Hobbit after all?

It's been an up and down couple of weeks for The Hobbit after it was left without a director when Guillermo De Toro pulled out of the project, the consistent delays having a huge impact.

And while David Yates, who worked on the Harry Potter movies, was tipped for the role yesterday it seems that Warner Brother and MGM are still trying to convince Jackson to helm the project, lets face it it would be the sensible decision.

After the departure of De Toro the Lord of the Rings filmmaker did state that commitments elsewhere would prevent him from directing the prequel movie but it seems that the film studios haven't given up hope just yet.

Jackson has already penned the script for the movie, which will be split into two films, and well as serve as executive producer when production finally gets underway.

But it seems that MGM and Warner will try to land Jackson before offering the position to another director - if Jackson had been director in the first place none of this would have happened.

There has been much speculation as to when filming on the movie will get underway, The Hobbit is tentatively scheduled for a 2012 release.

So far the only known cast members are Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis who will return to their roles as Gandalf and Gollum.
